PROJECT 8 – 2005 KEEP/CCES - ON THE AIR
Non-profit organizations such as KEEP depend on memberships and donations to fund projects. KEEP/CCES produced “Osprey Twilight”, a CD of environmental teaching songs written and recorded by KEEP/CCES, as a fun “home produced” project and to help raise funds for KEEP/CCES osprey projects.
WKMS, Murray, KY radio, an affiliate station of National Public Radio (NPR), learned about KEEP/CCES osprey nesting projects and requested an on site interview with KEEP/CCES representatives. KEEP, CCES teacher and students invited WKMS to join our osprey project team for a Lake Barkley Eco Cruise out of Barkley Lodge to view our first osprey cam sites and several active osprey platform-nesting sites.
Our group performed the song “Osprey Twilight” live for WKMS who recorded a segment of our interview and song for radio play. Our song was performed with ospreys calling in the background at mid-lake at Lake Barkley, KY. Two weeks later participants on a Lake Barkley Eco Cruise listened to the same song at the same osprey nesting area with the same ospreys calling in the background. The participants stated that they had heard “Osprey Twilight” performed on their local radio station in North Carolina. Evidently NPR picked up our KEEP/CCES project story and song airing the feature nationally, excellent promotion for ospreys and conservation education.
